Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) was one of the classic ‘demulcent’ or ‘emollient’ remedies in European tradition. One of a number of earliest mucilaginous wound remedies, applied internally to inflammation of the upper digestive system and to dry cough. It was eaten as a delicacy by the Romans and Egyptians. Marshmallow Root is cooling and moistening, bringing relief to hot and dry conditions. It has been used to treat various ailments, including coughs, skin irritation, and digestive problems, such as ulcers.
